Contact Energy to make $1 million contribution to earthquake aid effort

Contact Energy Managing Director David Baldwin today announced that the company would provide $1 million to support earthquake recovery efforts.

“As a major electricity and LPG supplier to the region, as well as an employer in Canterbury, Contact has been touched personally by the earthquake. In addition to the tens of thousands of customers we have in the region, our staff work here and are part of the wider community. Many of our customers, staff and communities have been directly impacted by the quake.

“In spite of their own circumstances, our Christchurch team has been working hard since the quake struck to support customers and meet their ongoing energy needs, through our call centres and our Rockgas LPG delivery networks.

“I’m very proud of how our team has responded, not just in terms of how they were able to restore the city’s gas supply networks, but also how they have been supporting customers getting back in business.

“In addition to Contact’s $1 million contribution, staff across the country are also making donations to support the earthquake relief and restoration efforts”. said Mr Baldwin.

Contact also noted that a scheduled price increase that was anticipated for electricity customers, who have benefited from fixed tariffs since early 2009, would be deferred for Christchurch customers.

Contact will work with Christchurch mayor, Bob Parker, and others to determine how the $1 million contribution should be delivered.
