Landcheck website delivers 5 million pages in first day

The landcheck.org.nz website built to help Canterbury earthquake victims find out the status of their residential property delivered 5.1 million pages in its first 24 hours of operation.

The website was built for free over the last four days by Trade Me for the Christchurch Earthquake Recovery Authority.

“We expected traffic to be solid but were still impressed that the new website managed to pass five million page views in its first 24 hours,” said Trade Me’s head of operations, Mike O’Donnell.

A total of 3.3 million individual property searches have been carried out so far.

“The large bulk of traffic has been from domestic (local) visitors, but it looks as if word has spread to expat Kiwis as well with 11% of all visits coming from offshore.”

To ensure the site’s ongoing availability Trade Me is hosting and serving the Landcheck pages from two different server farms, one in Auckland and one in Wellington. Of all visitors to the site, 5.5% visited via a mobile device (typically smart phones).

O’Donnell said the Trade Me team was pleased to be asked to help out. “We have over 200,000 members in the greater Christchurch area so it’s good to be able to make some contribution to the recovery efforts.”
