Holiday park owners optimistic about business


Despite a reported drop in confidence in some other sectors of the economy, holiday park owners are feeling optimistic about their sector, new research shows.

The latest Holiday Parks Business Confidence Monitor for June/July 2015 shows confidence has risen to +68, indicating that 68% of respondents are currently more optimistic than pessimistic.

The Holiday Parks Business Confidence Monitor, developed and managed by Angus & Associates*, surveys the Holiday Accommodation Parks Association of New Zealand’s (HAPNZ) 300 members.

Confidence for the next 12 months has also increased 10 points to +80.

Demand for June/July 2015 compared to the same month last year increased three points from May/June, with 41% of members surveyed saying demand had increased, 28% reporting it had decreased and 24% seeing no change.

Demand for the coming month compared to the same month last year increased nine points from May/June to +12. Of those surveyed, 27% expected demand to increase, 50% expected no change and 15% expected it to decrease.

“Confidence this month has increased to a level slightly above that of the previous year, after having dipped throughout the beginning of winter. With perceived demand up on last month, overall confidence could now continue to be relatively strong into the end of winter/beginning of spring,” HAPNZ Chief Executive Fergus Brown says.

“It’s great to see that members identified the appeal of holiday parks in general as a leading factor for the increase in demand. Holiday parks offer great experiences for everyone, from families to grey nomads, New Zealanders and international visitors.”

The holiday park sector provides 36% of New Zealand’s commercial accommodation capacity and 19% of commercial guest nights.
In the year ended Feb 2015 holiday parks provided 6,733,742 guest nights.
Guest nights to holiday parks are made up of approximately 32% international visitors and 68% domestic visitors.
While staying at holiday parks guests contribute almost $1 billion in direct expenditure to the local communities.
Approximately $594 million (59%) of the expenditure is contributed by domestic travellers, with the balance of $405 million (41%) by international travellers.
Expenditure by international visitors contributes directly to New Zealand’s export earnings.
