Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
When exploring options for hair transplant in Turkey, you’ll find clinics offering an advanced hair transplant technique called follicular unit extraction, or FUE. Also referred to as the strip harvesting method, it’s the oldest hair transplant technique and remains a highly effective one.
When adopting this technique, a surgeon removes a strip of skin with hair follicles on it from the back of the scalp. This is called the donor area and is commonly chosen because it’s where hair follicles are resistant to balding. Once removed, the skin is dissected under a microscope into individual hair follicular units.
When the surgeon has a sufficient number of grafts, they cut channels into the scalp and implant the hair follicles. Once the main stages of the FUE hair transplant are complete, the surgeon advises on important aftercare tasks, such as washing the implantation and donor areas and protecting the transplanted grafts from direct sunlight, rubbing, and impact.
There is also a slightly different version of FUE, known as Sapphire FUE. With this procedure, a surgeon uses a sharp, durable sapphire blade to make incisions. The use of sapphire allows for smaller, more precise incisions, which reduce scalp trauma and accelerate healing.
Direct Hair Implantation (DHI)
Direct hair implantation (DHI) is a modified version of the FUE technique, developed by the DHI Global Medical Group. During the FUE technique, the surgeon manually cuts channels into the scalp before implanting the hair follicles. However, with DHI, they have a pen-shaped tool that can do both tasks simultaneously.
Other Techniques
DHI and FUE are the two most common hair transplant techniques used today. However, other transplant methods do exist. If you have a large bald area near the front of your scalp, your surgeon may recommend flap surgery. A surgeon makes superficial cuts around three sides of the donor site while leaving the fourth side intact. This approach maintains the blood supply and helps surgeons cut the flap and lift it over the bald areas. The flap surgery procedure typically requires general anesthesia.
Laser-assisted grafting is a relatively modern technique that not all clinics yet offer. It involves the use of a carbon dioxide laser to create recipient sites for grafts. In past years, punch grafting was also used, which involved the use of small-diameter punches to create defects in the scalp for the insertion of grafts.
