Picture on digital TV plans still blurry

National Party Broadcasting spokeswoman Georgina te Heuheu says a clear picture on the plan to introduce digital TV for free-to-air broadcasters is still to emerge.

“The picture’s still very blurry. No definite costs for set top boxes or satellite dishes. The detail around programming remains hazy and it would appear the Minister can only guess at the likely all up cost to the taxpayer.

“Digital TV has been on the agenda ever since it was proposed by the previous National Government. Labour has described it as a ‘priority’ for years.

“The concept is not new. The advantages in respect to signal, and the potential for programme diversification have been well sign-posted.

“But the devil will come with the detail and the Minister needs to provide more of it,” says Mrs te Heuheu.
