National expresses support for Tongan deployment
National Party Leader Don Brash says the civil unrest in Tonga is of great concern and National supports the deployment of New Zealand military and police personnel to help restore order.
“The rioting in Tonga follows unrest in a number of other countries in the region, such as Fiji, the Solomons, and East Timor,” says Dr Brash.
“Yet again, New Zealand and Australia forces are taking the lead role in helping to restore calm.
“National supports the New Zealand Government’s decision to deploy military and police forces to Tonga.
“Obviously the Tongan Government is stretched in trying to keep the peace, and I hope that the quick intervention of the New Zealand-led force will help to restore order rapidly. I wish our personnel well in their work.”
