Press release from Unmask Palm Oil
The Unmask Palm Oil campaign is welcoming the support of the Green Party for mandatory palm oil labelling. The Green Party, long-time supporters of palm oil labelling, join New Zealand First in supporting the ‘Unmask Palm Oil’ campaign for mandatory labelling of palm oil in New Zealand
Palm oil is sourced from plantations grown on cleared Indonesian rainforests. Rainforest clearance is pushing Orangutans to the brink of extinction and accelerating climate change.
Ben Dowdle, campaign coordinator of Unmask Palm Oil says “We now have the support of two key opposition parties and we hope to gain Labour’s support in the near future. Mojo Mathers, Green Party MP has offered the full support of the Green Party to the campaign.”
"We should not have to turn ourselves into detectives to work out which products contain palm oil and which products do not. This information should be readily available on a label.
“This is a step towards consumers being able to make the basic ethical choice to not support the destructive palm oil industry. We hope that National is paying attention to the wave of support behind the campaign”
Green Party consumer affairs spokesperson Mojo Mathers is very supportive of mandatory labelling of palm oil.
“New Zealanders really care about the impact their purchasing has. They deserve to have the information they need in order to make sustainable purchasing decisions,” said Ms Mathers.
“It's time to change our labelling laws so that New
Zealanders know what they're buying and the Unmask Palm Oil
campaign is doing good work to highlight this issue,” said
Ms Mathers.
