Harbourmaster Warns Boaties As Storm Approaches Auckland

A severe weather warning has prompted ARC Harbourmaster James McPetrie to warn all Auckland boaties to check that their boats and moorings are secure.

A MetService forecast is predicting a very stormy Thursday and Friday for the Auckland region with northeasterly winds roaring up to 115kph in exposed places.

Mr McPetrie is urging boaties to check their boats and moorings as soon as they can, before the worst of the weather arrives late tomorrow.

“Boaties should ensure that their boats are securely moored or berthed and that all equipment on board their vessels is safely stowed or fastened to the vessel,” he says.

“Obviously, I would strongly advise people to avoid going out on the water in such stormy conditions.

“Anybody caught out on the water in the storm should remember that lifejackets must be worn in such conditions.”

Mr McPetrie says while the worst of the weather is expected to have passed by the weekend, boaties intending to take to the water over the weekend should check the weather forecast carefully first.
