Just how well is the Painted Apple Moth spreading?

The bad news is that it’s spreading very well indeed.

This time last year MAF was spraying 600 hectares. By comparison MAF is now spraying 10,000 hectares and that’s a 1,667% increase.

MAF are persevering even though they have said there is only a 60-80% chance of wiping out the Painted Apple Moth completely.

Remember moths are still being found in many areas after over a year of spraying.

That’s why it’s clear that aerial spraying is not working.

If MAF had instituted a range of other control techniques such as sterile male moths 5 years ago when the moth was first discovered, aerial spraying would not have been necessary.

Although MAF says it is reducing the current size of the eradication zone, they are continually finding new infestations which necessitate an increase in the size of new areas being sprayed.

MAF now withhold all maps showing how many moths they have caught and how many infestations they have found.

There is no evidence that the campaign is working and no end in sight to the spraying.
