High priority Christchurch city projects get the nod in 10-year plan

Major projects in Christchurch City that are programmed in Transit New Zealand's 10 year-plan include four-laning of the Main North Road (SH74) and the duplication and extension of the Christchurch Southern Motorway (SH73).

Both these projects were given a higher priority by the Transit New Zealand Authority in the final programme following consultation with the people of Canterbury said Transit regional manager Robin Odams.

"The Main North Road project was not in the draft 10-year plan but is now planned to start in 2005/06. The Southern Motorway Extension was similarly not in the draft plan and has now been included for a start in seven years time," he said.

"Ongoing improvements are required to state highways in Christchurch city, and in Waimakariri and Selwyn districts, to support urban growth.

"Transit's long-term plan is to four-lane Russley Road/Carmen Road. While these are not programmed in the current 10-year plan a number of intersection improvements on this route are in the plan. They include signals at the Yaldhurst Road and Buchanans Road intersections and improvements to the Main South Road/Carmen Road intersection," he said.
