Emergency gates on Hutt Road
Transit New Zealand will be establishing emergency gates in the median barriers on State Highway 1, Ngauranga Gorge and State Highway 2, the Hutt Road.
Transit’s project engineer, Stanley Chesterfield says there will be two sets of gates designed to be opened when a major incident in the Ngauranga Gorge or on the Hutt Road threatens a long road closure. “The gates will be designed so that a section of the median can be removed and traffic directed around major incidents. “There will be a gate at the top and the bottom of Ngauranga Gorge. There will be a gate at each end of the Hutt Road. The gates will in no way reduce the effectiveness of the median barrier,” he said.
“The gates will operate only when there are major incidents that will take more than two hours to clear. Transit, the New Zealand Police and the contractors will decide when the gates will be opened, but it won’t be for a minor nose-to-tail incident,” Mr Chesterfield said.
