Footpath upgrade for Inga Rd August 4, 2004

North Shore City Council has upgraded a popular footpath overlooking the Milford marina, at a cost of $45,000, to make it safer for pedestrians.

The footpath, on Inga Rd near Wairau Creek, is used by lots of runners and walkers, including elderly residents."

Narrow, broken and uneven footpaths can make it very hard for older citizens and young families to get around, "North Shore City Council' s works and environment committee chairperson Joel Cayford says.

Before we upgraded the path, pedestrians had to walk on the road if they wanted to pass someone. Now people can feel safe and confident walking on the footpath. "

The path has been widened on the southern side, and a safety fence built on both sides of the Wairau Creek bridge over the mangrove estuary.

The footpath has been extended from Omana Rd, on the northern side, which will allow better connections between Milford Beach and Byrnes Reserve. A refuge island will be constructed on Inga Rd, close to Commodore Parry Drive, to allow for easier access to the bus stop.

North Shore City Council spends approximately $1.45 million on upgrading and building new footpaths each year. Our 2004 Annual Survey of Residents and Businesses showed that overall satisfaction with North Shore City footpaths has increased from 57 per cent in 2003 to 74 per cent in 2004.
