Great result for Parnell Mainstreet

The announcement by Auckland City's Law and Order committee that it is extending the liquor ban in public spaces for the CBD into other mainstreet areas in Auckland City is a great result for Parnell, according to Hobson Community Board member Aaron Bhatnagar.

"Parnell Mainstreet and myself made strong submissions to Auckland City's Law and Order committee to ensure that the right days and the right areas were covered in the proposed liquor ban," said Mr Bhatnagar.

"Many local residents were getting frustrated with the mess left around their local streets the day after the most popular nights for student and youth drinking. Side streets like Ruskin St and Heather St were having problems with broken glass and other mess," said Mr Bhatnagar.

"Parnell is a top class entertainment precinct that prides itself on Passion and Style. Restaurant and bar patrons, as well as stake-holders like business owners and residents deserved protection with the help of a liquor ban," said Mr Bhatnagar.

"This will make a world of difference to local residents and business owners who are tired of dealing with broken glass, beer cans and vomit the next morning," said Mr Bhatnagar.

The new ban on public drinking includes the troublesome Wednesday nights, and extends further the number of side streets included than in the initial proposal submitted back in June.

Aaron Bhatnagar is the Hobson Community Board member who has responsibility for overseeing liquor licensing and also serves ex-officio on the Parnell Mainstreet.
