Unearthing deserving community volunteers

They are out there, but you would never know. They are the people who work tirelessly in the community without any thought of being rewarded for their effort.

Now is the time to tell them how much they are appreciated.

Nominations for the North Shore City Civic Awards 2004 open tomorrow (Thursday, October 28) and people are being encouraged to nominate someone truly deserving in their community.

Mayor George Wood says North Shore is lucky to have such a strong volunteer network.

"It is important that we thank these people who contribute so much, even though they are often the ones who shy away from such recognition," he says.

Since they began in 1990 North Shore City Council has given out 249 Civic Awards to individuals and groups. Previous recipients have given a helping hand to new migrants, young mothers, arthritis and stroke sufferers, sports clubs and young people, as well as the arts and environmental projects.

The categories for this year's Civic Awards are community, citywide, charitable organisations, community groups, youth and business.

Nominations are due in by Thursday, December 9, and will be judged by council's elected members and representatives from the community newspapers North Shore Times, North Harbour News and The Aucklander.

Nomination forms and criteria information is available at the council's libraries, area offices, head office, visitor information and leisure centres, and by calling Actionline on 486 8600. People can also visit www.northshorecity.govt.nz to find out more.

The awards will be presented in March next year.
