Now V8 decision has been made, let's
move on
Concerns about the impact on Auckland's
transport system have led commissioners to decide against
the V8 Supercars going ahead in 2006.
North Shore City's Mayor, George Wood, says his council, Transit New Zealand and Auckland City Council made enormous efforts to thoroughly investigate the possible effects of the race.
"The question over whether the race would go ahead has been hanging over Auckland for several months," he says.
"Now that a decision has been made, the councils can get on with the business of improving transport for all Aucklanders, with projects such as the Victoria Park flyover upgrade, and boosting public transport and roading regionwide.
"It's a shame that a major event such as the racing series didn't happen because our public transport system isn't up to scratch. We must work together to get the region moving and bring lucrative events to our shores," he says.
