Demolition to make way for new Birkenhead ferry terminal

Preparation begins this week for demolition of the old Birkenhead wharf building, to be replaced by a state-of-the-art ferry terminal.

"Contractors have begun erecting fences and getting the site ready to demolish the old wharf building," Auckland Regional Transport Network Ltd general manager, Kevin Brown, says.

"The demolition work, and maintenance and repair work on the wharf itself, will continue until the middle of the year," he says.

"The good news for ferry users is there will be no disruption to them over this time, or during the construction of the new terminal, due to start as soon as the demolition and repair work is complete."

"The terminal has a maritime design, in keeping with Birkenhead's character, and will include parking, a café, toilets, waiting area and canopies."

"We are thrilled to see this project getting under way, and looking forward to a great new facility for Birkenhead ferry users," North Shore City's infrastructure and environment committee deputy chairperson, Chris Darby, says. "Ferry patrons will be able to grab a coffee and a paper on their way to the ferry, and enjoy better lighting and security. There will be good seating and information, and areas for children to play or fish," he says.

"We are hoping to encourage as many commuters as possible to leave their cars at home and take the ferry, and this is a positive step forward towards achieving that aim."
