Back to school for Parksafe team

North Shore City Council’s Parksafe team is visiting schools throughout the city to ensure streets are safe for children.

Concern from schools and the public about dangerous driving and parking behaviour has prompted action. Parents are being reminded to drive responsibly and obey parking rules before and after school.

North Shore City’s transport operations and support services manager, Tom Morton, says many parents are parking on broken yellow lines, in bus stops, cycle lanes and across driveways.

“Parksafe officers have been warning offenders, however, if parents continue to break the law they will be ticketed,” he says.

“We need to remind parents that their driving behaviour is putting their children at risk. Children don’t have the same road safety skills as those of an adult, so we need to ensure they can get to and from school safely.

“In many cases, instead of parking over broken yellow lines or driveways to be close to school, parents could park a little further away and then walk to pick up their child.”

The Parksafe school patrols work closely with the TravelWise to School programme, where schools identify travel issues and work with the council to find solutions.
