Urgent Call For Manurewa Residents To Follow Inorganic Collection Guidelines

Manukau City Council has put out an urgent call to all Manurewa residents to follow recommended guidelines when disposing of rubbish during the annual inorganic rubbish collection.

The collection runs through to 23 September in Manurewa and residents are reminded that they should stack their rubbish neatly on the berm outside their homes, not on street corners or Council reserves.

Council’s Senior Policy Analyst Patricia Facenfield says:

“Over the last couple of weeks Council has received reports of illegal dumping in Manurewa. Putting out inorganic rubbish on the street prior to the advertised collection date is an offence against the Litter Act 1979 and attracts a fine of $100. On top of that people caught illegal dumping could incur collection and disposal costs starting at $200.

“All residents receive a blue leaflet ten days before collection in their area. The leaflet sets out the collection date for their street and details on what can be collected. It is important that people don’t put their rubbish out until the weekend before the collection to avoid health risks and to keep up Manukau’s image as a clean vibrant city.”

Ms Facenfield would like residents to act as the ‘eyes and ears’ of the community by calling Council’s twenty-four-hour Call Centre (phone 262 5104) if they see anyone dumping rubbish in a park or reserve.

“Most people look forward to our free inorganic collection because it is an easy way to get rid of unwanted rubbish stockpiling in the backyard. However there is a certain amount of responsibility that goes with the collection; keeping to the dates specified, encouraging your neighbours to do the same and stacking rubbish safely outside your house,” says Ms Facenfield.
