Waitakere City’s Diwali Festival or festival of lights on Sunday 16 October at the Trusts Stadium in Henderson promises to be one of the most entertaining events in the Indian community’s 2005 Calendar as well as for the wider community.

Hosted by the Waitakere Ethnic Board and sponsored by Radio Tarana, the Festival expects to attract an audience of 7,000 to enjoy the traditional Indian dances, sample the Indian delicacies, participate in the Rongoli competition as well as enjoy a variety of other ethnic performances.

This year’s programme has been divided into two segments. The first segment commences at 2pm and depicts the multi-ethnic nature of our communities and reflects the modern side of Indian music and dances.

The evening programme begins at 6pm and will emphasise the more traditional and religious aspects of Diwali or Deepavali, as it is also known.

Featured events include performances by the Sonar Chand Dance Academy, Neelima Dance School, Rhythm House Group, and the Reggae Samoan Band, ‘Aurasta’.
Sonar Chand who is overseeing the entertainment says “that the particular line up of performers for this festival is one of the most exciting he has been involved with…”.

The Festival plans to top off the night with a dazzling display of fireworks.
