Have your say on sea walls at Howick Beach

Manukau City Council is welcoming community feedback on options to upgrade sea walls at Howick Beach.

The upgrade is needed primarily for safety reasons as some parts of the wall are in poor structural condition.

In particular, work is needed on the red brick wall east of the pump station.

Two options are proposed to upgrade the red brick wall. The first is that the wall will remain intact, reflecting archaeological interest in the structure. The second option replaces the red brick wall with a stone wall to complement the seawall at the western end of the beach.

Council is also considering proposals to improve the “patchwork” look along the sea wall – the result of being built up over a number of years with many different materials and facings.

Proposed upgrades to the sea wall have prompted additional improvement plans for the area and a landscape concept plan has been drawn up. Improvements include better pedestrian access to the beach, additional planting and new garden beds, extra street furniture positioned to capture the best views and widening of the existing boat ramp.
