Fifth Protest Against Coastal Park Sale

SOUTHERN ENVIRONMENTAL ASSOCIATION
Working to protect Wellington's unique environment

NEWS RELEASE 20 NOVEMBER 2005

The Southern Environmental Associaton (SEA) is holding a fifth protest today (Sunday) (from 2 to 5 p.m.) to keep part of the new South Coast coastal park in public hands and stop it being sold to private developers for housing development, encouraged by local residents' huge support.

"We are buoyed by the very strong support received from Owhiro Bay Residents' Association at their meeting a few days ago. It is great that the packed meeting voted to support the retention of the land in public hands, and further public consultation over public facilities for the site" says SEA Chair June Epsom.

SEA chairperson June Epsom says: "Local Councillor Celia Wade-Brown (WCC's Environment Spokesperson) has put this issue down on the Council agenda for Wednesday 23rd November so that Councillors can vote to keep the land in public hands. We have urged the Council to think 100 years ahead in their parks planning, because if you do this you realise how precious all of our coastal public land is."
