Councillors agree on name for Clendon’s new beginning

Manukau City Council last night approved the name of Clendon’s new leisure and learning facility, which incorporates the existing Clendon community centre and the new library.

The centre will be named Te Matariki – Clendon Community Centre and Library.

In the Maori calendar Matariki signifies a time of renewal and is associated with new growth and new beginnings, reflecting the community and Council’s hopes and vision for the new facility.

The name was chosen by the Manurewa Community Board from a number of suggestions, following consultation with the local community, including Pukaki Marae.

The existing library in Clendon shopping centre will be closed from Saturday 17 December, with the new library up and running from Monday 9 January next year. Library users will be encouraged to use other Manukau Libraries during this time, the nearest being in Manurewa.

The mobile library service will also be on hand in the new centre’s car park on the Saturday 17 December (9.30am -12.30pm) and Tuesday 20 December (9.00am – 1.00pm).

The community centre will be closed from Christmas Day, reopening, with the library, on Monday 9 January.

The official opening of Te Matariki – Clendon Community Centre and Library will take place in early February next year, with a civic ceremony and community celebration to mark the event.
