Pooch Patrol Coming To A Neighbourhood Near You

Since August this year DSS Animal Management's Animal Control officers, under contract to Manukau City Council, have been visiting homes checking that all dogs are registered. All areas of Manukau are being covered, including rural areas.

Dog registration was due by the end of July 2005 and all dogs over three months old have to be registered. Owners of unregistered dogs will have their dog impounded unless they pay the late registration fee in cash. They will also be issued a $300 fine whether or not they register the dog.

Owners wishing to collect dogs that have been seized will also be required to pay impounding fees. Other penalties may apply depending on the offence. So far 280 dogs have been seized (this does not include those that have been registered on the spot).

Mohammed Hassan, Manager Clean Environment says, "In the past when we gave owners of unregistered dogs a grace period to register their pets this often resulted in the dogs being moved to cause a problem elsewhere."

"Dog owners can avoid a fine and the risk of having their dog seized by registering their dog before they are visited by an Animal Control Officer."

Dog registration forms are available from Council's 24-hour call centre on phone (09) 262 5104 or at the Customer Centre, Ground Floor, Kotuku House, Manukau Square.
