Newtown Festival 2006

Organisation for the Newtown Festival is in hand.

The Festival runs from 24 February to 13 March with main activity being the Newtown Fair Day to be held on Sunday 5 March 2006 The festival involves activities in the Newtown area.

The programme that has been brought together is one that enables all interests of the Newtown Community to participate or experience the diversity and richness that is uniquely Newtown.

The Festival includes new participants as sponsors, artists and supporters of the event. There are the events of previous festivals such as the picnic in Carrara Park, the Fair Day, performances and theatrical events

Performances by local community performers, poets, and Fringe Festival performers involved at events in the Newtown Cultural and Community Centre.

The first weekend includes the Newtown Festival Fair Day which will bring together around 180 stalls, 3 performance stages, a disc jockey stage, childrens' rides, and street performers to entertain and enthral around 40000 people. Held on the main streets of Newtown, this has become a major event in the Wellington Festival and outdoor event calendar. The fair is expanding with additional Children's Rides and to accommodate the stalls, Newtown School grounds will also be used.

The second weekend includes the annual Gay and Lesbian Fair at Newtown School.

Also included are athletics, soccer, a country fair day at the Newtown Community Centre, as part of the Wellington Fringe Festival, and two events : Culture Jam and Street Ball that will be run by the Wellington City Council Youth Department
