Kumeu Hosts Unique Festival

Just another fabulous excuse for Aucklanders to have fun!

That's the event and the promise from the Kumeu community as they promote the first-ever Jafa & Jandal Festival.

The festival aims to encourage Aucklanders to get out of the city and sample some genuine country hospitality in a fun and festive environment.

Events include street parties, jazz afternoons, dress-up jandals competitions, a golf tournament and even a jafa art exhibition.

For the two and a half weeks of the festival Kumeu will be transformed into the jafa and jandal capital of New Zealand.

The innovative theme is the brainchild of the Kumeu Coat & Country Promotions Group who were looking for a fun way to put Kumeu and surrounding country on the festive map. "We looked at the success Nelson had from its Wearable Art Exhibition, and thought we could come up with something similar," says one of the organisers, BeesOnLine Chief Executive Maureen Maxwell.

Ms Maxwell says the group wanted something that epitomised the timeless values of the "real' New Zealand. "When we thought of icons all of us could identify with, Jaffas and Jandals immediately came to mind. Then of course we have Jafa-Just Another friendly Aucklander-and we wanted to celebrate that, as well."

Community groups, schools and local businesses have all got behind the concept, says Ms Maxwell. "It's just going to be one long party."
