Laurie Gets Award For Rescue Of Beaten Woman

Laurie Gets Award For Rescue Of Beaten Woman

June 2006: National security company ADT has congratulated one of its officers, Laurence (Laurie) Maber, 43, of Glendene, Auckland, on being named “Security Officer of the Year” in Wellington.

The award is made annually by the New Zealand Security Association in recognition of outstanding achievements and professionalism beyond the call of duty.

In the early hours of Christmas Day, Laurie “rescued” a woman who had been kidnapped, held hostage and suffered a severe beating over several hours at the hands of a Mongrel Mob associate.

National Manager of ADT’s Manned Services, Mark O’Brien, said the company had been proud to nominate Laurie because of the way he had responded to a situation he came across while responding to a noise complaint callout.

“Had he not intervened, it was the view of Police that the incident would have resulted in a homicide, such was the violence of the assault.”

Laurie says he was on way to a noise callout at 2.20 a.m. when he saw a car parked in Mount Wellington in a way that aroused his concern, especially at that time on Christmas morning.

He says he initially approached the car because the people inside seemed to be acting suspiciously, but as he got closer it was clear that the woman was the victim of a violent attack.

“My presence interrupted the man’s violent outburst and by shining my lights on the car the man was distracted, giving the woman a moment to escape.

“I grabbed her and quickly gave her refuge in my car and the man who had been beating her took off. He was later arrested by Police.”

“It is a night I won’t forget, particularly the way this badly beaten woman thanked me over and over again, as I attended to her injuries and comforted her from the ‘safety’ of the patrol car.”

Laurie has been a security officer with ADT for seven years. In addition to his guard and patrol duties, he is a warranted noise control officer. He prefers to work nights because “it is more challenging”.

His rescue of the woman earned him an ADT Service Achievement Award, and now his deeds have been recognised nationally.

“I’m stoked. I know there are security officers out there doing good things day and night. I’m sure their actions make a big difference in our community, so I’m proud to have this award.”
