Labour candidate wins Tamaki Board by-election

Labour Party candidate Arna Metcalfe wins Tamaki Community Board by-election

Yesterday Labour Party candidate Arna Metcalfe won the Tamaki Community Board by-election with more than a third of the votes cast.

Arna is a resident of the Tamaki-Maungakiekie ward and teaches English at McAuley Girls High School in Otahuhu. Arna has a Bachelor of Arts degree with Honours from the University of Auckland and has taught at McAuley since she graduated with her teaching diploma in 2003.

Arna is a Tongan group coordinator for Polyfest and has started a branch of Amnesty International at the school. Arna is a mentor for the YWCA Future Leaders programme, a youth mentoring programme for young women.

Labour Councillor Leila Boyle said "It's great that Arna won, she has excellent skills and networks and will be a real asset to Tamaki and the Labour Community Board team."

Tamaki Community Board Chair Kate Sutton said "Arna is so enthusiastic about the role and the people in the area; I can't wait to work with her." She went on to say, "We had a great campaign and Arna was the best candidate for the job. I am thrilled with this huge win."

Arna will be sworn in as a board member at the next Community Board meeting on Tuesday 22 August.
