No Authority o Commit Manukau City Council Staff
Media Release
Friday, 12 January 2007
Manukau Mayor Sir Barry Curtishas no authority to commit Manukau City Council staff to Tonga according to Councillor Dick Quax.
The mayor was approached by the Tongan Prime Minister at the end of last year to provide assistance in the rebuilding of Nuku’alofa after the riots in November. Sir Barry agreed to send Manukau City Council staff to Tonga to assist with reconstruction. Costs have yet to be agreed to but it is anticipated that the Tongan government will pick up the tab.
This is a decision that needs the approval of full Council according to Cr Quax. The Mayor has no right or authority to assign staff. Responsibility for staffing resources rests with the city CEO and I would expect that he will seek the approval of Council to send staff to Tonga.
This is not the first time that the mayor has offered Manukau staff to work on projects unapproved by the Council. In September he offered the services of the CEO to work on the strengthening of the Auckland regional governance.
