Spend a night in Africa at the zoo

Take a walk on the wild side on Sunday, 11 March and immerse yourself in the sights, sounds and tastes of Africa at Auckland Zoo’s famous Africa Night in support of endangered species.

A fundraiser for the Auckland Zoo Conservation Fund (AZCF), Africa Night (4.30pm to 9pm) starts with a behind-the-scenes look at some of the amazing animals that call Africa home, including the zebra, giraffe, lion, and rhino.

A traditional South African meal in the Old Elephant House, accompanied by African music follows this guided safari. A cash bar will operate. To complete the African experience, South African-born Auckland Zoo director, Glen Holland (a former wildlife ranger and legendary story teller), will present a slide show on African wildlife and Zulu culture.

An auction will also run during the evening. Established in 2001, the AZCF supports partnerships and initiatives for the conservation of wild animals and their habitats, both locally and internationally. Some of the projects the AZCF supports include;

- Ark in the Park (Waitakere Ranges)

- Cheetah Outreach (South Africa) – a trust working to conserve Africa’s most endangered big cat

- 21st Century Tiger’s Kerinci Seblat National Park project in Sumatra

- The Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Project (SOCP).

All profits from this event, which is being organised by the Auckland Zoological Society, will go directly to the AZCF. Society members, zookeepers and other zoo staff donate all their time.
