More bus lanes proposed to extend the city’s 26km network

Auckland City Council is proposing to introduce peak-time bus lanes along sections of Remuera Road and St Johns Road, further extending the city’s network of bus lanes.

The proposed bus lanes would make use of existing clearways along these roads but avoid major intersections and the Remuera Road shops.

“This is a great opportunity to improve travel choice for Aucklanders living and working in the eastern suburbs. Bus lanes are proven to make catching the bus more attractive,” says Councillor Richard Simpson, chairperson of the council’s Transport and Urban Linkages Committee.

“Up to 24 buses travel along these roads at peak times, carrying around 1000 people. The bus lanes would ensure a quicker journey and more reliable service for bus passengers.

“The city’s eastern suburbs are poised for further growth. To ensure that doesn’t simply mean more cars on these already busy roads, we need to make travelling by bus easy and dependable.”

Cyclists, motorcyclists and emergency vehicles would also be able to use the bus lane during peak times. In addition, the proposal includes safety improvements such as dedicated space for cyclists at intersections and bus stop build outs that help buses reach the kerb more easily.
