Ellis becomes first Council candidate in North

Roger Ellis today became the first candidate to announce his candidacy in the Northern Ward for the City Council elections.

“We need to attract even more skilled and creative people to our city. The Council needs to listen more to the concerns of parents and to think about the needs of children in its urban planning. For instance, road safety is a growing concern for many parents and residents here in the north.

Mr Ellis says that our city has a fabulous future if it develops a strong, hi-tech local economy. “Wellington needs a 21st century infrastructure if we’re going to compete in the new global economy”.

“As a long time resident of Newlands and Johnsonville/Churton Park area I am well aware of the feeling that our communities have been overlooked. It’s time for a change. I will listen to the concerns of local residents and take what they say seriously” said Mr Ellis.

In the months ahead Mr Ellis says he will be visiting local community groups and will be interested in hearing from residents. “I am keen to meet as many residents and community groups as possible.” says Mr Ellis.

As Head of Government Relations for Vodafone, and as a former Ministerial adviser at Parliament, Roger Ellis is well acquainted with effectively representing the views of others in the government processes.

Mr Ellis served for six years on the Churton Park Community Association Committee – including a year as President. He is also on the organising committee for the Northern Voluntary Service Awards. During 2006 Mr Ellis led a high-profile campaign to ensure that children could attend their local primary school. He has also been active in youth work with his church. Mr Ellis will stand as an independent candidate in the Northern Ward. He has a Masters degree in Politics with First Class Honours.
