Sport Wellington Region Supports Indoor Community Sport Centre
Sport Wellington
Region has welcomed the Wellington City Council's (WCC)
re-affirmation of last year's decision to build a 12-court
Indoor Sport Centre at Cobham Park.
Sport Wellington Region Board Chairman Ross Graham said: "While we understood the need to evaluate all site options, it is now time to get on and build it. The Indoor Sport Centre will provide a true multi-sport facility, hosting a wide range of sports as well as providing a venue for school events."
Wellington has long lacked adequate indoor facilities for a number of sports, including Netball, Volleyball and Basketball. Discussions began within the sports community in 1999 about building a large indoor facility for the benefit of all Wellingtonians.
As the WCC stated some time ago: "A large indoor sports facility would provide assured access for weekly competition leagues, a high quality playing surface, reliability through protection from the weather for players and spectators and an ability to involve a large group in an activity at one time."
Sport Wellington Region is the independent body for sport and physical activity in the region.
