Auckland And Christchurch Protests Call For Urgent Attention To Iran’s Humanitarian Crisis
This weekend, Iranian New Zealanders and human rights supporters will gather in Auckland and Christchurch to call for urgent international attention to the escalating humanitarian crisis in Iran and to raise concerns about the limited coverage of the situation in New Zealand media.
The crisis extends beyond geopolitics and reflects the ongoing impact of state repression on ordinary people across Iran.
Repression has intensified significantly in recent months. According to the Norway-based monitoring organisation Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO), at least 24 people connected to recent protests have been executed since March, including six executions carried out within two days. Thousands more have reportedly been arrested, many facing serious charges that could result in death sentences. Reports indicate that executions have increased following the ceasefire, contributing to a growing climate of fear among Iran’s population of approximately 90 million people, particularly for those currently on death row.
For nearly 70 days, Iran has experienced a near-total internet blackout for the general public, isolating millions from the outside world while state-controlled channels remain operational. The blackout has severely impacted livelihoods, especially for those dependent on online work and communication, while further intensifying social and economic hardship.
Reports from inside Iran also indicate that attempts to access alternative internet services have led to arrests, solitary confinement, torture, and, in at least one reported case, death in custody.
The Iranian community in New Zealand is calling for greater media attention to the human impact of the crisis and for balanced coverage that reflects the voices and lived experiences of those directly affected. The protests will stand in solidarity with affected families and highlight the experiences of Iranians both inside the country and across the diaspora.
