Leisure Centre Press Statement
Hi You may be aware of an incident at the Leisure Centre at Stanmore Bay last night. Below is the latest information we have on the incident and we will advise of any updates as they come to hand. I expect to have the investigation findings late this afternoon.
--
- At approximately 6.30pm last night there was a minor chlorine gas release in the main pool area of the Leisure Centre.
- 40 people were in the pools at the time and 5 people were taken to hospital for observation due to what an ambulance officer described as ‘minor inhalation of chlorine gas’. Leisure Centre staff administered oxygen until the ambulance officers arrived.
- The entire Centre was evacuated as a precautionary measure while the gas was cleared and the gym and pool areas are open for business as usual this morning.
- The Department of Labour has been notified and Council’s Health and Safety Manager is conducting a full investigation into the incident.
- Our hearts go out to the 5 people involved and their families.
