Welfare centres and hotline for Northland
Civil defence and welfare agencies have established welfare centres and a hotline for people in Northland requiring assistance because of flooding and severe weather.
The Director of the Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management, John Hamilton, said that any people requiring welfare assistance (e.g. accommodation, clothing, food etc) should telephone 0800 779 997.
Welfare centres are now operating in:
Kaikohe: St John Centre, 58
Raihara Street
Kawakawa: St John Centre, 85-93
Station
Kerikeri: St John Centre, 357 Kerikeri
Road
Paihia: St John & Fire Station, Williams
Road
Opua: Opua Cruising Club, Baffin Street
Pukenui:
St John Ambulance Centre, State Highway 1
Kaitaia:
Community Centre, Cnr South & Matthews Ave
The number for emergency services is still 111.
The Far North and Whangarei District Councils have activated their civil defence emergency operations centres (EOC).
The Northland Regional Council’s civil defence emergency management group is monitoring the situation across the region. Up-to-date regional information is available from the Council’s website www.nrc.govt.nz The website will be updated throughout the night.
Mr Hamilton said that the National Crisis Management Centre has been activated to monitor the situation and be available to assist with central government support if necessary.
