Mana Service Lane
For immediate release * Mana Service Lane*
The Mana Service Lane behind the Post Office will become a two-way lane managed by a "give way" sign, said the chairperson of the Porirua City Council's City Services Committee.
Cr Robert Shaw said his Council has responded to concerns expressed by the community regarding traffic demand and safety issues.
A survey indicated that there was greater demand for travel north than expected, and drivers were not particular well behaved in the area, probably because of the unsatisfactory situation that developed.
"The problems included traffic moving in the wrong direction and at high speed".
"There is the potential for a disaster, particularly given that small children can frequent the area", said Councillor Shaw.
"The original plan was that the lane would be seven meters wide. Unfortunately, a brick building was built that precluded this and the railway managers are not willing to lease the Council any land to make the lane wider" Cr Shaw explained.
"The situation is not ideal, but it is the best that can be arranged in the circumstances".
"Council and the community will no doubt assiduously monitor traffic on the lane", he added.
