Memorial Plaques Enshrine Memories For Future Generations
Ten memorial plaques are being installed around the Rodney District in recognition of the local men and women who served in the Army, Air Force, Merchant Navy and Navy during the first and second World Wars.
Rodney District Council is installing the plaques at Silverdale War Memorial Park, Remembrance Reserve Orewa, Upper Waiwera Cenotaph, Helensville War Memorial Hall, Riverhead War Memorial Park, Waimauku Memorial Hall, Warkworth Memorial Church (2), Wellsford Memorial Domain and the Leigh Cemetery.
Rodney District Council’s mayor, John Law, says the plaques will ensure the contributions of the combined services including those of the often forgotten Merchant Navy, will be remembered by present and future generations.
The Merchant Navy was made up of civilians who sailed ships that delivered troops, military equipment, food, fuel and other materials, and has largely gone unrecognised despite playing a vital role in both wars.
“I am delighted the council has taken this opportunity to install the plaques in prominent public places so that everyone can honour and respect those who contributed to the freedom we enjoy today,” says Mr Law.
“These plaques recognise the equal contribution made by all four of the services that depended and relied on each other to achieve victory,” says Mr Law.
The plaques will include crests, names and dates, and are being installed over the next three weeks.
