Debate Over Mayor Can Pulverize Manukau

Date: 17 August 2007
Press Statement
By Tunumafono Avaula Fa’amoe, candidate for Otara Community Board

Debate Over Mayor Can Pulverize Manukau

“The political debate of various opinions that have been expressed through the Pacific Radio Network regarding who is best to lead Manukau into the future runs the risk of pulverizing our community” says Tunumafono Avaula Fa’amoe

“I am of the generation that has benefited from those who had the vision to migrate to this country so that their children could be well educated. And in return serve (Tautua) our communities here and at home. With an educated mind that is guided by a passionate heart. It is with that, I believe we can no longer just blindly follow someone because they happen to share the same colour skin or ethnic background as us. I believe that in order for us to fulfil the vision of our parents or those who have gone before us; we should make our decision about our future mayor by asking educated questions that are guided by our hearts”

What has each candidate done for Manukau City in the past? What do they bring to the job? What are their values? What is their track record in the community? How committed are the candidates to the job of mayor?

“Commitment is what is required, action rather than words” says Fa’amoe.

Tunumafono Avaula Fa’amoe is a Labour candidate for the Otara Community Board. Mr Fa’amoe is a founding member of the Pacific Island Advisory Support Services Trust or PIASS and despite his sight disability has a social work degree and runs his own consultancy business.
