SH6 Tahunanui Intersection
Upgrade ahead of schedule
Transit is ahead of schedule for the completion of the SH6 Tahunanui Intersection Upgrade in Nelson.
Transit Regional Manager Graham Taylor says the work to replace the twin roundabouts on Tahunanui Drive with one traffic signal operated intersection is ahead of schedule and on target for an October rather than November finish.
“We expect that the traffic signals will be
up and running at the beginning of October meaning the State
Highway component of the project is mostly finished. This
is good news for Nelsonians as it means not only will delays
on the road be addressed sooner, but also the works will be
finished well in advance of Christmas and the tourist season
which was one of our aims,” Mr Taylor says.
He has asked for Nelson’s continued patience while the project nears completion.
“I can appreciate that this has caused some disruption because we have been working during the day, but the good news is we are nearly finished so please bear with us.” Work on the Tahunanui Intersection Upgrade began in late May and includes work for Nelson City Council involving Bisley Walk and Abel Tasman Carpark, which should be completed in November.
The project is expected to address excessive delays on Tahunanui Drive, particularly during peak hours, caused by the two roundabouts.
It takes into account the needs of cyclists and pedestrians as well as the different requirements of motorists travelling along this road for commercial, residential and recreational purposes. Mr Taylor says there should also be some relief for the Port Hills suburbs where motorists avoid congestion and delays along Rocks Road and Tahunanui Drive by “rat-running” through residential streets.”
