Bylaw review process streamlined
Auckland City is currently in the process of reviewing 22 separate bylaws, as required every 10 years by the Local Government Act 2002. The deadline for these reviews is 1 July 2008.
The council’s Planning and Regulatory Committee yesterday adopted a streamlined approach that merges bylaws into four groups. This process provides greater clarity for the community as to what the bylaws seek to achieve during review within the wider bylaws context. It is expected to help interested and affected parties to engage with the review.
Groupings of bylaws have been categorised by purpose. These categories are:
• public health/public
nuisance related
•
• environment
related
•
• public domain (use of/behaviour)
related
•
• administration
related.
•
Several important acts covering topics
such as dog control, liquor control in public places, solid
waste, Orakei Basin, traffic, signs, billboards and bylaw
administration have already been reviewed. Of the remaining
22 bylaws, priority is given to those that are deemed
critically important to the proper functioning of the
city.
