Clevedon Cares Appeals Canal Housing Decision

Clevedon Cares Appeals Canal Housing Decision

Clevedon CARES is appealing to the Environment Court in Auckland over Manukau City Council's green light for a controversial high-density housing project.

On 6th September, the MCC announced it was going ahead with a change to the District Plan, required to facilitate the building of 297 new homes on man-made canals close to the mouth of the Wairoa River near Clevedon.

In lodging its appeal earlier today, Clevedon CARES described the Council's decision as inconsistent with principles of the Resource Management Act.

The community action organisation says the decision would "impact significantly and adversely on the ability of people and communities to provide for their social, economic and cultural wellbeing" and would, in effect, allow for the development of an isolated urban suburb in the heart of the countryside.

"Naturally, the MCC's decision in favour of the canal housing project was a blow to local people. But it's made us even more determined to stop this ill-conceived development in its tracks. The fight for Auckland's rural belt continues!" says Clevedon CARES spokesperson, Mary Whitehouse.

"We've been cheered by the good wishes and encouragement of people from beyond our area, who recognise the need to prevent high-density urban developments creeping and leapfrogging out into the countryside," she adds.
