Auckland Regional Amenities Funding Bill
Auckland Regional Amenities Funding Bill
What is your opinion?
The Auckland Regional Amenities Funding Bill is currently before a government select committee for consideration. The Bill provides for a number of amenities in the Auckland Region to be funded through council rates.
The Bill establishes a statutory framework for secure and sustainable funding of the following eleven amenities; Auckland Observatory and Planetarium Trust Board (Stardome Observatory), Auckland Philharmonia, Auckland Regional Rescue Helicopter Trust, Auckland Theatre Company, Coastguard Northern Region, New Zealand National Maritime Trust Board, New Zealand Opera, Surf Life Saving Northern Region, The Auckland Festival Trust, Watersafe Auckland. Auckland Zoo will also receive funding under the bill, subject to it first being established as a separate legal entity.
If this Bill goes through ratepayers can expect a portion of their rates to go towards the secure funding of these organisations. The Bill prescribes a total "cap" of 2 per cent of rates, and this is phased in over four years.
