Cause for celebration for child safety in Taranaki

A report released today by local child injury prevention group, Kidsafe Taranaki Trust, reveals that the number of children being admitted to hospital with unintentional injuries in Taranaki is on the decline. The latest report analysing data from a three year period indicates a total of 894 admissions; which is nearly 250 admissions less than in the previous reporting period.

Kidsafe Taranaki Trust Coordinator, Sarah Wilson said: “We are rapt to know that child injuries in Taranaki are reducing in numbers. We know that the collaborative efforts of all the Kidsafe partner organisations has contributed to this decline.”

Unintentional injury is the leading cause of hospital admissions for children in New Zealand. Sharing the results today is also particularly timely for Kidsafe, with Kidsafe Week starting in Taranaki on Friday 12th of October. This Week is part of the national launch of the Safekids Campaign, which aims to highlight the importance of preventing injuries to children.

Kidsafe is committed to reducing child injuries locally. The Kidsafe Taranaki Paediatric Admissions Report centres on child hospital admissions for injury within the 2002 to 2005 period. This research project is designed to aid the development of child injury prevention projects. “Knowing more about the causes and circumstances of injuries is critical for us, so that targeted projects can be developed to prevent these injuries from occurring in the future,” said Ms Wilson.

Previous reports have highlighted the magnitude of child injuries in Taranaki, and the need for coordinated, collaborative projects aimed at preventing serious child injuries.

“Our key purpose is keeping Taranaki kids safe from injury, so if we know we have contributed to that, we have cause for celebration,” she said. “Although there is still a lot of work to be done to reduce these injuries further, Kidsafe is dedicated to continuing this work into the future.’

“We know that our community is very committed to keeping children safe, so it is great news to share at the start of Kidsafe Week.”
