Northcote Intermediate student Rhys Kingaby got a pleasant surprise at assembly today, when Mayor Andrew Williams arrived to announce he was the winner of the Northern Busway design and win competition.

“I can’t believe I won,” the Year 7 student said.

Rhys’ surprise was topped off with a $1000 cheque for his school, a free bus charter for his class and a $50 book voucher for his design, soon to be displayed throughout the city on Adshel bus shelters.

Rhys’ design was picked from 22 entries from four intermediate schools, impressing judges Elaine Venter of Mairangi Arts Centre, Kim Boyd of The Lake House, and Mayor Andrew Williams, with his use of colour and catchy slogan, ‘Use the bus, much less fuss’.

“Rhys’ poster stood out from the rest because of his creative composition, quirky sense of design and punchy message,”commented judge Elaine Venter.

The competition was open to all North Shore intermediate students, encouraging them to think creatively about the benefits the busway will bring to North Shore people.

The entries were judged on their delivery of public transport message, use of space, colour and design, and impact as a visual statement.

Rhys will also receive special guest status at the Northern Busway opening in February.

The Northern Busway is New Zealand’s first busway. An opening celebration will be held on February 2, 2008 with live bands, food, street entertainers, and a fun walk from Smales Farm to Akoranga stations

A display of all finalists’ entries will be held at the council’s head office foyer, 1 The Strand, Takapuna, from December 3 to 8. Entries will also be displayed at the February opening.
