Auckland Supports Earth Hour With ‘Lights Off’ Request

Guests at Auckland’s newest five-star luxury hotel, The Westin Auckland Lighter Quay, will be asked to dim their lights on Saturday night - and not just to set a romantic mood.
The Viaduct Harbour hotel is supporting Earth Hour – a 60-minute ‘black out’ from 8pm to support the message of action against global warming.
Guests will be invited to support Earth Hour by turning off lights off where possible in their rooms and, other than emergency lighting, hotel public areas will be darkened. Flickering candlelight will take the place of overhead lighting
The hotel’s neon signs will be switched off, an air conditioning unit will be shut down and all back-office areas will be darkened.
The first Earth Hour was held last year in Sydney as an initiative of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and The Sydney Morning Herald.
This year, cities across the world will turn off their lights for one hour, sending a global message that it’s possible to take action on global warming if individuals and businesses unite in a common cause.
As a result, millions of people in some of the world's major capital cities including Sydney, Copenhagen, Toronto, Chicago, Melbourne, Brisbane and Tel Aviv will switch off for Earth Hour 2008 on March 29.
