Auckland, New Zealand – 28 October 2008. With more than 40 modified bathtubs set to compete in the inaugural Englefield Bathtub Derby across the three categories; motorised, sail, paddle or pedal, the competition is hotting up with just over a week to go until the tubs take off.

With many designs having been in the making for months and secret sea trials taking place all over the North Island, ‘tubbers’ are taking the competition seriously with some travelling from as far as Wellington, Whakatane, Taranaki, Taupo and Hamilton to compete at the Takapuna event.

The most contested category will be the motorised class and with strict design compliance rules to adhere to, the race will be a test of ingenuity, design creativity and for many, good luck. Overseeing the competition will be a panel of judges who will be looking to select the supreme race day winner from across the three categories. The supreme race day winner will take home a trip for two to watch the World Bathtub Championships in Nanaimo, Vancouver in July 2009.

Presiding over the tubs will be an expert judging panel comprising; Auckland Regional Council Councillor Christine Rankin, Coastguard Northern Region President Joe Davis,
Better by Design Design Specialist John Hatrick Smith and Kohler New Zealand Channel Marketing Manager Vivienne Wood.
