Auckland Commonwelath Games Discussion Progressing

Auckland’s potential bid to host the 2018 Commonwealth Games is still very much alive according to AucklandPlus Chairman Michael Barnett.

AucklandPlus, the region’s economic development agency, has been involved for some time in discussions with Central Government on the possibility of a feasibility study into hosting the event.

“We are working hand in hand with Government ministers to try and make this happen. The conversation is far from over,” Mr Barnett says.

He says, contrary to some media reports, council CEOs around the region have agreed to contribute to the study, and the Government has not ruled out a contribution of its own.

“There is a perception that the Commonwealth Games have become too big and expensive for countries like New Zealand. But we have been talking to the Commonwealth Games Federation and it is clear they see a return to an affordable games as highly desirable.

“We believe Auckland could offer this and the feasibility study that we have been talking to Government ministers about is the all important first step.”

Mr Barnett says AucklandPlus has been heavily involved in the recent Louis Vuitton Pacific Series and has seen first hand the great impact major events can have even in tough economic times.

“When you look at the direct impacts of the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series and the business connections made during the series that will pave the way for future investment in out economy, you are reminded just how important major events are. Auckland and New Zealand must continue to try and attract major events and we will reap the benefits.”
