North Shore Mayor welcomes Pak ‘n Save decision

North Shore Mayor welcomes Pak ‘n Save decision

25 February 2009

North Shore Mayor Andrew Williams has welcomed today’s High Court decision which will open the way for the Wairau Road Pak ‘n Save supermarket to open.

Justice Venning has dismissed the appeal by Progressive Enterprises which sought to overturn an Environment Court decision to allow the supermarket to go ahead.

Mayor Williams says that he is delighted that today’s result will allow the supermarket to finally open to the public.

“This decision will be a huge boost to the economic rebirth of the Wairau Valley, a shot in the arm to the entire North Shore, and an improvement in choice for North Shore residents,“ he says.

The new supermarket is expected to open in May, and will create about 300 new jobs.

Mayor Williams says that he is delighted that Pak ‘n Save, “a 100% New Zealand owned business”, will have a stronger foothold in the city.

“Pak n Save have always been wonderful supporters of the North Shore, in particular the Albany store is the major sponsor of our hugely successful New Zealand Breakers basketball team.”

He says that the supermarket has now gone through three stringent tests - the council consent process, the Environment Court, and now the High Court.

“We sincerely hope that this decision marks the close of this long-running dispute.”
