Lynnmall Shopping Centre’s West Coast Wildness

Media Release
March 2009

Lynnmall Shopping Centre’s West Coast Wildness

A coastline of breathtaking, dramatic scenery . . . frothing seas crashing onto scorching black sand . . . lifeguards keeping a close watch on beachgoers frolicking in the surf. The West Coast of Auckland is playfully coming to life at LynnMall Shopping Centre in the form of an exciting new children’s play area.

To celebrate the launch, LynnMall Shopping Centre is giving $500 worth of LynnMall shopping vouchers to the clever and inventive punter who comes up with the perfect name for the new play area. An entry barrel at the play area construction site will receive naming competition submissions.

“Kids will be in their element here – whether it’s scrambling around Piha’s Lion Rock, surfing the wild west coast seas, or riding the giant gecko, the new play area has something fun and exciting for everyone,” said LynnMall Shopping Centre Manager Shelley Jenkin. “The whole team is thrilled to be presenting something new and different, that will be a great place for all local families to enjoy and treasure. We wanted to build on our commitment and service to the community. This play area is for everyone, and we’re pleased to be providing a fun space that gives children a chance to run around and exert some energy while their parents take a break from shopping.”

“We’re a family-orientated shopping centre, so having the right services for children and caregivers is very important to us.”

The play area design includes Piha’s iconic Lion Rock, surf boards for the kids to test their balancing skills, and a gecko ride – all surrounded by West Coast-themed images and large, thick reeds. All design components have a distinctive West Coast feel, reflecting the ruggedness of the area.

It is not only the features of the play area that are being kept local. Local resident Roger Drew from Ardee Associates designed and project managed the construction of the play area, along with local artist Kate Lang, who cleverly carved the gecko and Lion Rock in the play area.

The play area will be officially opened and named, with the help of the children from LynnMall’s Lollipops Play Centre, on Wednesday 18 March. The winner of the naming competition will be also be announced.
