Official recognition for volunteers in Manukau
Hard work in Manukau is about to be recognised as the nominations open for the 2009 round of Community Board Volunteer Awards on Tuesday, 14 April 2009.
This year is the turn of the Botany, Howick, Mangere and Otara wards. The community boards will accept nominations for volunteers who contribute their time to the community for no payment.
The awards will be split into five different categories including leisure, lifetime, youth, learning assistance and the extra mile which applies to those who go above and beyond the call of duty. Nominators just need to tick the box on the form that best relates to the type of work the volunteer does.
Manukau mayor Len Brown is a huge supporter of the volunteer awards. “It’s so important that the city takes time out to thank volunteers who are devoted to making Manukau an even better place to live.
“Volunteers go out of their way to help Manukau every day and now we want to show our appreciation and applaud their efforts.
“Without volunteers, many clubs and organisations would struggle to keep afloat. Manukau is really lucky to have so many volunteers.”
Each Manukau ward holds volunteer award ceremonies every second year by taking it in turns. So next year the Clevedon, Manurewa, Pakuranga and Papatoetoe wards will be thanking volunteers in their areas.
Nomination forms for volunteers working in the Botany, Howick, Mangere and Otara communities are available from Manukau Libraries, Citizen’s Advice Bureaux, leisure and arts centres, council’s Customer Centre. The form is also available on the website at www.manukau.govt.nz/nominatevolunteers
The closing date for nominations is Friday, 15 May 2009.
